My hometown – Hong Kong

My life in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a fast paced city where people are constantly on the go and life can get a bit hectic. They walk very fast, eat very fast, they are fast in everything. Before I came to the UK, I am the one of them and feeling pressure everyday. It is really different with the UK…

Different between Hong Kong and the the UK

Hong Kong is a very small city like an ants of the world, and the the UK is a lot bigger in size than Hong Kong, Apart from the size of the city, there are a lot of differences between Brighton and Hong Kong.

There is a saying, ‘A New York minute is a Hong Kong second’.  People in Hong Kong live a hast lifestyle while Brightonians live a more relaxed lifestyle. Everything in Hong Kong happens so quickly sometimes it feel like there is no time to breathe. Hong Kong is also known as a ‘concrete jungle’, the city is crowded with skyscrapers and buildings of all sorts. As for Brighton, there buildings are smaller in size and there is a lot of greenery in the suburbs.

Similarities between Hong Kong and the UK

Due to the fact that Hong Kong was once an English colony, the local culture of Hong Kong is affected by the British in some certain degree. Many buildings in Hong Kong are inspired by British architecture, for example, the Clock Tower at Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. Apart from buildings and architecture, many streets and roads in Hong Kong are named after many English politicians or figures. Nathan Road, a road that stretches throughout Kowloon linking the districts of Tsim Sha Tsui and Sham Shui Po, is named after Sir Matthew Nathan, the 13th Governor of Hong Kong who served between 1904 and 1907. Even though Hong Kong and England are miles and miles apart, bits of Victorian England still echoes in the streets of Hong Kong.

My life in CIT classes

My purpose for studying this course

Computers are programmed to sort and analysis data which is very handy in daily life. It is important to learn how to manipulate artificial intelligence properly. In CIT classes, we are encouraged to learn about the correct usages of Microsoft Word and Excel. We are also introduced to a blog-hosting website – WordPress.

What I have understood and enjoyed

Microsoft Word and Excel are common software programs that are used in schools and workplaces. These programs allow documenting and recording data easier and more convenient. I find the course really enjoyable and it is fascinating to learn about all the built-in functions in the programs. Everything was fairly self-explanatory. Using WordPress was easier than I expected as its layout mimics a Word document.

What I have found difficult or contradictory

I have the most difficult thing is teaching with English, I am really bad in speaking and listening English, therefore, I always don’t understand when the teacher need us to do something.

What I need to know more about

The course has brought my attention to the concept of plagiarism. Plagiarism is a severe offense and it is important to reference or credit the original author.

How we are taught

CIT lessons are very independent. We are given instruction sheets and we are expected to follow the instructions step by step. At the end of each module, we have to take part in a test which examines our understanding of different software.

I love English!

My reason for studying this course

This is my first year studying in England. My first language is Cantonese therefore I do not speak English often at home. I find English classes at Bellerbys very helpful as it improves my English.

Differences and similarities between academic and general English

one of the examples of the main differences between academic and general English is that academic English focuses more on grammatical techniques; while general English is about communication. One of the similarities  between academic and general English is that both of that improve my  English.

What I have enjoyed and disliked

My English teacher uses humour in class, which I find it very enjoyable. I also enjoy taking in part in debates. The only thing I dislike about English lesson is that I am very bad at English and it is very hard for me to understand what the teacher is saying in class.

English is difficult!

Some times I struggle in class because I do not fully understand what the teacher is saying. Luckily, I receive a lot of help from my teacher. I feel like my English is improving day by day.

What I need to know more about

England is very difference from what I have experience back at home. I am very keen on learning more about the British culture, especially daily slangs.

Workload in UK

I think the workload in UK are very moderate, not too much and about 2 to 3 homework in a week, it is much better than Hong Kong. I think this is the right way to let students absorb knowledge.

My Friendships – in and outside class

Before I came to UK, I was very worry about that I can’t make any friends here, but when I came, I make many friends in and outside class fortunately. It is because there are many schoolmate are also came from my country, also, I go to the sport event on every Saturday and I make many new friends through this kind activities.
